julius caesar

by William Shakespeare
directed by Ryan Howe
featuring Eric Chase as Brutus

George Washington. JFK. Superman. We have our myths. Over and again we retell the same stories, based on some combination of fact, hearsay, and imagination. There are always reasons to re-tell stories: well-told stories make those reasons clear.

When William Shakespeare wrote Julius Caesar for the premiere production at the Globe Theatre in 1599, he delved into well-known historical mythology. In the sixteen centuries since the events took place, the story had been retold many times. Still, the merit of his tragedy was so great, that his play has stood foremost among Caesar mythologies for four centuries.

Like all theatrical productions of dramatic works, our Julius Caesar is a product of the playwright’s words and our imaginations. I hope that our production illuminates some of the reasons why this story is so often told.
